Removing paint from pvc pipe

I need to replace a sprinkler valve that has painted inlet and outlet pipes (it's right next to the house, and the painters just blasted everything with paint when they painted the house). I assume I won't be able to use pvc primer and glue to attach new fittings unless the paint is removed. What can be used to remove the paint without affecting the pvc?
