Installing a new Rheem Performance Platinum 50 gallon natural gas water heater. Will be installing a Watts comfort recirculating pump on the hot nipple. I believe the Rheem has heat trap nipples installed from factory, but if I remember correctly, Watts says to not have heat traps when using this recirculation system. Any problem with just removing the hot nipple/heat trap and putting in a straight nipple?

Comfort is a Grundos recirculation pump brand.

I don't think removing a heat trap is needed for pump-driven recirculation. You may have read that for a gravity type (no pump) recirculation.

If you did change nipples, you would want the dialectic type. Some heat trap nipples let you pull something out to remove the heat-trap aspect. I suggest you check the instructions for your recirculation pump to see if there is mention of heat traps.

Ok, thanks. The thing I read about heat traps and the Watts pump system came from the Watts system manual, if my memory serves correctly. However I installed that system 2 years ago so I might be misremembering.

I just checked my Watts sytem manual, and I can't find anything about a "heat trap" nipple being a problem, I guess I was wrong and must have read that somewhere else. I have also found several sources that say its not a problem.

A recirc line should not go to the hot outlet fitting.
