If you want to avoid both pipe thread compound (pipe dope) and PTFE tape, put bar soap on the threads. Tighten tighter.

Hemp string is what they use in Europe with straight threads. You wind it into the threads.

Pipe sealant and health risks. If any sealant is applied by the recommendation of the manufacturer with most if not all starts 2 threads back from the end. The risk would be negligible. The only pipe sealent that was taken off the market contained lead probably 45 years ago. With trillions of screwed connections if there was a problem California would of found it and it would be labeled not for sale in their state.
