Pipe diameter and water

Hello,

My question is about pipe diameters and how it affects available water in the home. I will be replacing a 35 foot section of supply line which is connected to 1” diameter pipe on the supply end and 3/4” at the other end (going into the home).

If I use 35 feet of 1” pipe followed by a 1” x ¾” coupling, will I get better available water into the home than if I just use 35 feet of ¾” pipe?

I would run the 1" all the way just incase you need more volume such as irrigation

Thanks for the reply Sylvan – a great suggestion in general however in my specific case I won’t be having any additional future add-ons.

I guess my question gets down to this: will I have better water availability in the house if I keep the pipe 1” for the greatest length possible or does a short section of smaller diameter pipe wipe out any benefit from using the larger diameter pipe?

A two bath home gets a 1" supply. The smaller 3/4" pipe has friction loss that really cuts down what can come out at the end.

Yes. Pressure drops add.

If you are used to electronics, it is a little like two resistors in series.

Yes you will get better performance. Although wether that matters or not will be highly dependent on how fixtures and appliances addres used and in what combination.

I have a 1" suction pipe into the jet pump and a 1/2" fitting coming out to the pressure tank. Based on volume demands eg., watering horse trough, I would add more volume to the tank and stabilize the water pressure if I switch from 1/2" to 1" ?
