I noticed this morning that there was no hot water. I went to re-light the pilot (pilot flame was a good blue), and started it up.
After a few seconds when I turned to heat and the gas valve clicked on there was a loud "back fire" sound.
I shut it down and wasn't sure if this was coming from the combustion chamber/burner assembly or perhaps noise from the tank.
There was a sizzle sound as well.
So I drained the tank, flushed it a few times, and re-started.
It did not give me a back fire but the flame box seems very odd to me. It is lit yellow but fades in and out with a sizzle, like something is "dripping" on it- which I suppose could just be condensation from the flue. But I guess I was think the flame should be blue.
It is a honeywell valve and no error codes are showing - I get the one flash every few seconds indicating normal.
I was thinking about pulling the burner assembly but this is eight years old....

I did set it stay lit for a while but after a few minutes there was a lout "bang" like a back fire so I shut it down.
Doesn't seem right...

Ok- pulled the burner assembly and the mesh has a tear and looks pitted in various places.
Problem is a new burner assembly alone is close to $300 and there are deals that include a new valve for $350.
But is it worth that investment in an 8 year old tank?

That boom is delayed ignition.Condensate would stop when the water would get warm. If it doesn't stop need a new heater. That sizzle is water flashing to steam.

Agreed Fitter30. And not really work replacing the burner assembly on an 8 year old tank - right?
