I've gone through Lefroy customer support and haven't gotten anything useful. This unit is in my daughter's home in Queen Anne (Seattle), and is a few years old now. The handle has gotten hard to turn (and noisy!), and she's trying to pull the handle off its stem. There was no set screw holding it onto the shaft - it could have fallen out - or the original installer might have cemented it on as I believe they did with the shower door (which I ultimate had to drill out).
My daughter is dripping Kroil penetrating oil into the set screw hole every day (with hole pointed up), but I'm doubtful (but hopeful) this will work.
What makes this really difficult is that you cannot use a standard puller - there is no front access to the interior shaft. Looking at page 7 of the installation guide, there is an adapter that screws into the handle from the back. So even if you remove the front cap all you would see is the back of the screw holding the "adapter" onto the handle. Sigh.
My thoughts so far:
- rip a 1/2" x 4" plank of say 2 feet length in half, cut out a circle so that the plank would wrap the "adapter", then screw the two parts together. With this in place, one could snap the board out using both hands, putting even pressure on the handle from the back
- encase the handle in wood (front and back), screw the parts together, then use a slide hammer screwed into the center of the front board, again to provide even pressure on the handle from the back. Use a lightweight slide hammer and be very careful!l
- pop the front cap #21 off, then drill out the center screw #22 (from the back to the front). This would most likely destroy the threads of the handle (but maybe not). Now the handle will come off, The "adapter" #24 is attached to another "adapter" #23 - the set screw is what holds these two parts together. By removing screw #21, both adapters could be removed - and then replaced with new parts.
I will attach the part diagram (which is page 7 of the also attached installation manual) and the disassembly instructions provided by Lefroy.
Their instruction to me was exactly: "I was able to run this pass technical, and it was advised the water would need to be completely shut off and the faceplate should be removed including the handle with the cartridge and then work backwards to have the handle removed from the handle adaptor. It is recommended a plumber comes in to service the fixture."
I believe what they are saying is to remove the faceplate (which can be maneuvered around the handle), then remove the assembly the adapter #23 attaches to somehow - maybe sliding the Canopy #17 forward to touch the handle. This would hopefully expose the cartridge, which could then be unscrewed.
