Hello

I have two teenagers who recently started taking long showers. The will shower until the hot water is used up. I have a 40 gallon tank and I have the temp set to the lowest temp for a lukewarm shower. My shower is old from the 1950s so it has a hot stem and a cold stem. The water heater is set so that only the hot stem is used in the shower.

What is the lowest flow shower head on the market?? I would like to get one and install one. I believe this will help or maybe not?

Should I go for a 1.25 or 1.5 GPM ? What is the lowest GPM available?

An alternative is to turn the water heater temperature *up* and add cold water on the output side in a thermostatic mixing valve to get it back down to a minimum comfortable temp. In other words, your 40 gallon water heater will hold a lot more BTUs at a higher temp than at a lukewarm temp.

Now, if they are going to still keep showering until the hot water runs out, then this will extend their showers..
