I'm in the middle of re-doing the waste line in my crawlspace, and I'm also re-configuring the waste line for my sink as part of a kitchen remodel. I'm hoping to get some advice as to what my options are. I attached a drawing (I apologize ahead of time, I'm obviously no artist). The kitchen is currently setup as pictured on the left of my drawing. I'd like to eliminate that horizontal pipe. It's an old copper pipe tying into a cast iron vent. I'm afraid it's going to leak one day.

I had a plumber take a look and he recommended a studor valve in the sink cabinet, then go down through the cabinet floor and tie into the drain. It seems like people are pretty down on the studor vent option and heavily favor a traditional vent. Would the way I have it pictured on the right hand side of the drawing work? Not pictured is I do have a dishwasher connected to the tailpiece coming out of the sink. I don't know if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any advice.

No. That is called an S trap.

I would stick with the old system until such time as it leaks. Show us a photo of where the copper goes into the wall, with any movable escutcheon slid away. We will be looking for signs that the copper is going into a trap adapter.

Thanks for the quick reply. I attached a couple pictures. They're not the best. I can take another when I get home from work if it'd be helpful. One is of when I had the wall open (kicking myself for not dealing with this then), the other is how it is configured now. Behind all that spray foam there is a copper 90 coming out of the wall with a copper stub coming out of it. Then there is the rubber fitting bridging the gap between the copper and PVC. The sink moved over about a foot, the second picture is how it's setup now.

If your water is not acid, copper can last a long time.

If you wanted to put in a disposal, then the new drain might be important. If it works, I would just not put grease down the drain, I would put a screen filter in the drain basket, and be happy.

If you want to run a new drain down, don't be afraid of the Studor. If you smell sewer smell from the drain in the future, unscrew the old and screw on the new one.
