This was flagged in a pre-sale inspection...not a 3rd party home inspector, but the actual municipal inspectors must inspect before sale can occur. They mentioned this water heater vent, but didn't specify what exactly is wrong. 34k btu unit.

Not sure about the flex pipe, but it does look like it slopes the wrong way over part of its path.

Maybe making the vertical pipe 1/2 or 3/4 inch shorter if it will still be over 12 inches after being cut.

Ah, ok, I didn't catch that. Not sure if it matters, but The flex is the chimney liner. Another thing I thought may be it is the elbow is crimped on both sides...does direction of flow matter as to male to female ends go?

Riser needs to lowered. Flue pipe crimp goes into plain end as the pipe goes away from the heater. The galvanize riser the ell is install backwards. The riser pipe needs to be crimped. Need crimpers, snips and three self tapper screws for each joint. You tube will have videos of the crimpers and flue pipe install.

I have crimpers and snips...Let see double check that I understand this. Essentially I just need a new elbow, because it is crimped at both ends. Shorten riser to get the proper fall, and crimp the top of it. Slide into plain end of elbow. Is the Chimney liner installed correctly being over crimped end of elbow? or is there too much exposed and I should put in a stub of rigid over the crimped elbow, then crimp the end going to flex? Thank You

New ell will adjust if you need it to look up a little the old one probably wouldn't turn. Liner looks like it will be long enough too fit on the ell.

I'm almost certain that that flex pipe is aluminum and not even close to being rated as a chimney liner or fir water heaters. Pretty sure that it needs redone with metal (steel) with a minimum thickenss designated by the manufacturer.

Looks too shiny to me to be aluminum.

Some stainless is lightly attracted to a magnet, but I don't know if a stainless steel liner is attracted to a magnet.

Yes, It likely needs to be replaced with metal—probably steel—meeting at least the minimum thickness specified by the manufacturer.

That larger tube thst the flex is shoved in has a sticker on it looksvlike thst might be the liner. Pull that flex look inside that tube unless that label tells what it is. Are if its in a masonry flue . 5" i.d.?

A friend of mine received a violation on his water heater installation because he used self-tapping screws ( I always used them)

Now they want high-temperature tape, no pop rivets or screws. They gave no reason why this code change

Never heard that just the three screws per joint.
