Hi my husband and i have a new home that was just built 1 year ago with the washer and dryer on the first floor. Unfortunately, this does not work for our family and we want to move it to the basement. We want to move it to the same location as the exsisting pipes just one floor below where it sits now. Can this be done? We are wondering about backflow problems, etc. What do we need to add in the basement to make this work. We are very handy around the house just not familiar with any problems with plumbing that we may be overlooking. PLEASE HELP!! Thanks!

Where does the sewer line exit from the house? The drain needs to be above that point by around 2' (not exactly sure of the height of the required standpipe) and be able to slope 1/4" per foot from that exit point, or a place where you can tie into an existing run, and where you want the washer. If those conditions exist, then it shouldn't be too hard to do it. Check with the manufacturer of the washer to see how high they allow the exit to be. Sometimes, they allow an extension to the discharge hose. This will be your determining factor. The water supply doesn't really care on the supply line, so that could be routed down to the new washer location.

If the sewer line is not low enough, then it gets quite expensive. Then, you need an extraction pump, tank device to move the water up to the sewer outlet. These things work, but are to be avoided, unless really necessary.

Vent

You will need a vent. If there are not fixtures in the basement now with a vent you can tie into, then you will have to have a vent pipe come up through the first floor. It can tie into an existing vent 42" above the floor.
