Goulds 10HS05422C, M05422 motor. I recently put in a 500 gallon tank in my well room and pump into the house with the Goulds and CSV. Pump is in a 4" PVC flow sleeve. Has been working just fine since August. A couple days ago lost pressure in the shower and went to find the pump not running. I have a low pressure cutoff pressure switch, so it was powered off at that point. I pulled the lever on it and the pump spurted a bit but didn't sound good.

I pulled the pump today and when powered it will not spin, and draws 16A when doing so. I separated the pump from the motor and the pump turns fine, but the motor shaft doesn't budge. What would cause the motor to suddenly seize?

Looks like Goulds doesn't offer a warranty for pumps bought over the Internet so I guess I'm eating the cost for a replacement - just would like to figure out whether I did something wrong and killed the motor or this was just a fluke.

I had it installed horizontally, I read conflicting info about whether this was OK but saw a source that said it was fine with this pump. Maybe not?

Centripro motors are chinese. Not at all surprised it didn’t live long(especially if it’s a two wire motor). I bet if you buy a Franklin motor, it will serve you longer, although those have been cheapened up as well.

Horizontal install had nothing to do with it. As was said was probably just a bad motor. After all, pumps are built to fail so they can sell another, not to last and put pump companies out of business. Two wire pentek/centrapro motors did have some problems with their split phase capacitors failing. They tried to blame it on the CSV so I had to figure out the problem for them. Lol.

If you are sure the tank didn't run low on water (because a low pressure switch is not fool proof), then I would say you just got a motor that was made on a Monday. Sorry.

Yeah, it never got low. Four months is not great. I will probably tear the motor down to see what failed. Seems like a mechanical issue with the rotor locked, ohms still read OK.

Always check with tech from the manufacturer. With any questions. They hear feedback from techs or if they get a bunch back of pumps under warranty their going to look at them.

I replaced it with this cistern tank style pump. It was simpler and cleaner to install this vertically sitting on the bottom vs the horizontal pump in a sleeve, IMO. Rain Brothers were a dream to deal with.

Wish you luck. Yeah those cistern pumps are convenient with the bottom intake. But the motor size was reduced and the bearings changed to make room for that. I see lots of complaints for a short life. But that is they way things are designed these days.

Yep, understood. We'll see how it holds up. The last one died the morning after I ran the pressure washer for an hour. I finished the job this last weekend by emptying the 500 gal tank pressure washing the rest of the walkways and decks, until the built in float switch shut it off so I know it works correctly. Drained and cleaned out the tank, got it refilled overnight and we'll see how long this lasts now.
