New place we've just purchased in Tahoe (cold but not that
cold). Place was originally built by plumber, 100% ABS circa 1981.

in an effort to get W/D out of kitchen and electric water heater->tankless
out of hallway, I'm moving them to garage, where I'm building a small insulated
utility room. Main plumbing soil stack already passes through utility room.
I'm putting several sections of unistrut on the walls for gas and copper plumbing.

Question:
Can I run new ABS for W/D and laundry sink exposed on the strut, or does it
need to be in-wall (which I'd rather not dig into exterior wall for). can't go on
other wall because of doorway, and garage is a slab. vents can go straight up
without problem.

Or should I do it in Brass DWV (like we did for commercial location)
or hubless cast iron (which seems silly when rest of everything is ABS)

ABS exposed in the garage runs into problems with the fire code. So does a gas dryer unless it is raised 18" above the floor

Seems like once the utility room is built, it's no longer a garage. Assuming you provide the proper garage-to-house drywall barrier between the garage and the new utility room. And use the proper door to the utility room (if you enter it from the garage).

Cheers, Wayne

ok, thanks. just haven't seen it that way and wanted confirmation I wasn't
doing anything outside code. (and usually haven't seen ABS DWV run on unistrut)

Yes, 5/8 drywall, insulation, and fire rated door. W/D will probably be stackable.

The main stack is already sticking out in garage surrounded by a drywall chase, so
putting it into wall for 8ft, then coming out and into the stack seemed silly.

No problem with ABS in the garage as long as its not passing through the fire rated wall. that's where you'll have issues.
