I am looking to add a water softener, and the location where it would go is quite far from any drain. The house has no crawlspace, and no attic, and adding roof penetrations is really not ideal. The unit could be installed in a small utility closet where the water heater is, and there is an existing opening to the roof there from an old floor heater, so a pipe could be run to the roof. From there, a run could reach any number of vent stacks, but it seems I cannot tie into the top of a vent on the roof, even with a trap and air gap.

In one location, where the laundry is, there is an abandoned/unused vent stack.

I am curious if I can convert this abandoned vent to part of a drain and T into the washing machine drain.

So, one idea:

Exit the water softener, and go vertically through the roof as 3/4 drain (upsized because the run will be greater than 20'). Run horizontally to the abandoned pipe location, where a P trap then dumps via air gap into a pipe running back down into the wall, and then Tees into the washing machine standpipe. Does the trap need a vent since it is going to an air gap? Can I do this?

I also have an unused top opening in the washing machine box. Could the 3/4 pipe run over to the abandoned location, simply turn down through the roof into the wall, then P-trap and dump (air gap) into the washing machine box? Do I need an additional vent here, since there is no actual connection to the drain side to siphon the trap dry? Is there a good adapter to have an air gap drain and washer drain hose fit into the 2" opening?

Or am I overthinking this and I can just use an airgap adapter in the box and the p-trap is taken care of by the trap and the bottom of the washer standpipe? Seems like I wouldn't need a separate trap just for the softener drain.

Thanks for the help all.

https://airgap.com/product/ag140-001/ If 3/4 inch pipe, you could feed 3/4 into a 3/4 1/2 hub-hub reducer. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Charlot...S-Reducer-Coupling-PVC-02100-3400HD/203824249 I think is such a piece. The bigger side glues to 3/4 inch pipe. The smaller side slips onto the AG140-01.

Yes.
Thanks! The more I thought about it (and after finding the airgap.com website) the more I figured I was overthinking it. Thanks for the quick reply. Much appreciated.

AG140-001 looks like the perfect fit.
