My well was dug in the 1940's as a farm well. Pump was last replaced due to lightening strike 6 years ago. I am in Westchester County NY. We find randomly short periods of rotten egg/sulfur smell coming from cold water only. It is totally random, every few days or more. Well water was tested and no bacteria but I think they only test for coliforms. If bacterial source in my well head, I would expect it to be at its worst in morning after pump and pressure tank have sat idle for 8 hours but it happens totally randomly during the day and if I keep the water going for 10 mins or so it disappears completely ( and I know the human nose is extremely sensitive in smelling sulfur). I posted on the neighborhood forum whether anyone else experiencing same problem. The next door town has its own waste and water treatment facility about 1 mile away and for the first time in 10 years the area stinks of rotten eggs/sulfur when you drive by. Have not been able to get any response from that town's water department. I am hesitant to shock my well for various reasons. Is there any type of water testing, bacterial, etc that could help me pinpoint the source of the problem?
