I suggest that you consider getting a lab water test for your raw water, if you have not done so. The test should include amounts for iron, manganese, pH, hardness, and more. That info is useful for various reasons, including setting up the softener. If you wanted to get a coliform test, note that special sampling techniques are needed to avoid contaminating the sample. I think a lot of positive coliform tests are false due to sampling techniques. I am not suggesting a coliform test for a deep well, but others may.

I suspect you are right about sucking up sediment.

An additional test I suggest is to scrape up black stuff from your filtering. Stir it into a glass glass or glass jar. Stir or shake. Note how quickly the material settles... minutes, hours?

For sediment, you could add another stage of filtering before your existing cartridges. They make washable pleated cartridges that might be suitable for your pre-filter. You probably do so, but do keep spare O-rings on hand for your cartridge filter. You cannot always reuse the O-ring.

If the problem was iron and manganese, I would expect a considerable taste to the raw water, although softeners do remove dissolved iron and Mn. Also, I would expect your neighbors would have a similar problem, so you might discuss that.
