Hello everyone.

I’m in the middle of a home remodel and need to hire a professional house painter for both the interior and exterior. Since this is a major renovation, I want to make sure I’m choosing the right painter who can handle the unique needs of a remodel, especially with all the prep work involved.

What should I specifically look for in a painter when it comes to working on remodeled spaces?

Any recommendations for questions to ask or tips on how to avoid common mistakes during the painting process?

Pricing advice would also be helpful!

What unique needs belong to remodels?

Verifiable references, local license, insurances, etc. same as if the project was new construction
Any recommendations for questions to ask or tips on how to avoid common mistakes during the painting process?
Ask if there will be a full time lead painter /supervisor on the project start to finish. Be sure to identify all the details in writing, if you want baseboard sanded, holes and blemishes filled, a primer coat and two coats of premium paint be sure it's spelled out. If there's water stains on the ceiling be sure the contract addressed them, agree on the price, the payment terms and the duration with respect to weather (exterior). Learn about the 5 distinct levels of drywall finishing and decide which one(s) you will expect and where you'll expect them (ie: L5 not realistic in a broom closet)

We went through something similar during our remodel last year. The painter we hired had done a lot of interior painting Toronto jobs, and what stood out was how he handled prep—fixing small cracks, sanding between coats, and keeping the space clean while other work was going on.
