I have a single family house which currently does not have any backflow preventer installed.
I want to add an irrigation system, and I know I need to add a backflow preventer. I called the utility to ask some questions, and what they told me surprised me.
They say the backflow preventer must be the first thing immediately behind the meter and the irrigation tee must be between the backflow preventer and the house. So the city line would be protected, but my house would not. I asked why, and they explained about backflow, and the hazards of an irrigation system. However they couldn't explain why they won't allow only the irrigation system to be protected.
This seems dumb to me, wouldn't it be safer all around for the irrigation system to be fully isolated from the city main AND my house? Is this standard?
