Hello, I'm wondering if there is anyone in the know about my situation?
I have been plumbing for 15 years and feel I am pretty good at what I do. I have been ok with just being an apprentice all these years. I have trained many apprentices o er the last several years. Some of which have gone on to get licensed.
I have been stuck from advancing in my career due to not having my journeyman or masters license, but am tired of sitting stagnant and not making the money I should be with my skill set.
I went in to take my journymans exam once and even though i know i could have passed it, I was not able to get it completed in the time period we were where allowed. So had to turn it in uncompleted and failed.
The problem is that I have a form of dyslexia where it takes me longer to comprehend what I am reading cause the words get a little scrambled. So I will have to re-read the same question several times to understand what it is asking on written tests. I've always done really well on tests in school but it took me twice as most of the class.
And I know I can pass the journymans plumbing exam, and then go on to get my masters, but there is no way I can do it in the alloted amount of time for the exam.
I am wanting to retry, and am wondering if any of you have had a similar experience or if you have heard of someone with a reading disability getting accommodations to get a longer time allowed to them to take the exam?
I know if I had extra time I could pass my exan and I've been thinking about looking into it, but I'm little afraid that if the they found out I had reading issues that they may deem that as a reason not to allow me to be licensed for some reason. So I have not persued it.

Talked to the proctor giving the exam. If there not available the county or city plumbing inspector. With your experience hopefully they would either lead you in the right direction or a verbal exam.

I would go directly to the state licensing agency before scheduling a new test. They have an affirmative legal requirement to make accommodation for disabilities.

The agency may need you to get a statement from a physician detailing your special needs. But I would talk to them first, they may have some special requirements you have to meet.

Good luck! With your grit and determination, I am sure you will succeed.

Our school got people more time frequently when people needed it. You just gotta talk to the right person within your licensing system and have them layout what you need to do.
