Long time lurker here, first time posting...
I'm trying to solve a smelly dishwasher problem. So far I've been focusing on the appliance itself without much success (cleaned interior and components thoroughly, checking rinse aid dispenser, changing detergent, running hot water at the sink before running dishwasher, running empty with vinegar periodically, etc, etc). It's a Bosch dishwasher that was in place when we bought the house in 2015.
But it occurred to me that the odor issue might be with the existing drain plumbing (see attached photo). The stub coming out of the wall seems higher than newer homes; when I replaced the kitchen sink I had to be careful not to buy a sink too deep. Lowering the wall stub by re-doing the galvanized drain/vent stack behind would be a job I'd like to avoid. Our house was built 1947 (Seattle, WA).
I have the dishwasher drain loop as high as the hose will allow and I've always assumed there was enough air gap. But the kitchen sink P apparatus is basically full of gray water all the time, due to the higher drain stub coming out of the wall and the bottom of the sink.
Do I have back flow into the dishwasher? That's what's causing the on-going dishwasher smell?
Thank you for any observations!
