    ABS to clay connection

The Fernco rubber couplings I'm using have 1.75" contact with the pipe.

    ABS to clay connection

Yep, I'm digging with a shovel. I am recently retired and this is what I do instead of going to the gym. Like they say, pain ain't nothing but French bread. And btw, I live in So Cal so there's no frost heave and when I'm done all joints will be glued except where the cast iron exits the house...

    ABS to clay connection

Not sure what you mean. The no-hubs I have are made by Fernco. Do you mean Fernco hubs with the stainless steel jacket? I installed a no-hub without the jacket when I added a clean out 25 years ago and it looks fine.

    ABS to clay connection

I am replacing about 38 feet of old clay pipe with 4" ABS. I'm doing it ten feet at a time because the line must remain in use and I can't set aside time to do it all in one go*, so I have to slide clay-to-ABS Fernco no-hubs onto the ABS pipe and then, when the pipe is in place, slide the...

should be a simple clog, but whiskey tango foxtrot?

Bathroom sink suddenly clogged. Hasn't happen in many years. Nothing down the pipe but soap and toothpaste. I went in with a 1/4" drain snake but no matter how much I try I can only get down about 15" (measuring from the wall). The pipe is 2" iron that might be as old as seventy-five. Could it...

    Transporting water heater

I have to move a 30 gal gas water heater from the big box about ten miles to my home. Will I damage the tank by moving it on its side in my covered pick up? Would it be worthwhile to rent a truck to move it upright? Many thanks.

Drain pipe blocked with hard debris

Several years ago I went to my local tool rental to get a drain snake. 'The tip's broken off but hang on a second and I'll weld it back on for you' the guy at the counter said. I took it home and sure enough, on the way back out, the tip broke off two feet down the old iron drain pipe from my...

    Unconventional wiring in my house

Thank you all. Yes, what worries me most is the wiring I cannot see – the stuff in the walls. And yes, it seems pretty strange to me too that a 1950 house would have K&T, but everything about this house (and the others in the neighborhood built by the same contractor) is funky. For example...

    Unconventional wiring in my house

PS . The panel is new. I am replacing substandard systems in the house piece by piece.

    Unconventional wiring in my house

Thank you. For my education, what is the danger with connecting new wire to old if the gauge is the same?

    Unconventional wiring in my house

My 1950 tract house has many unconventional remodel 'solutions.' Originally it had knob and tube wiring with the old rubberized insulation, but at some point that was replaced with THHN. But here's the funky part: they routed the THHN through the old knobs and tubes and the hot wires and the...

Desperately seeking gas water heater smaller than 30 gallons?

Thank you Wayne, I really appreciate your thoughtful answers. It looks like the unit you mention allows for B-vent, but would Z-vent be better? What do you recommend? What else would installation require?

Any recommendations for brands of 30 gal?

Thanks but I don't have the gas volume for a tankless.

Desperately seeking gas water heater smaller than 30 gallons?

My house is set up with a gas water heater that serves only the kitchen sink and washer. (There's another that supplies the showers and lavatories.) The current 30 gal tank needs replacing and I was thinking that we could get by with a smaller unit but I don't see any gas water heaters smaller...
