Drain Flanges - PP or Chaulk and misc tool questions of the week

I usa clear "3 hour shower" silicone on kitchen and bath drain flanges. The small squeeze tubes are more costly, but quick. Any drawbacks to this? I also use a giant ratcheting cutter for drains up to 2". It was about $170 but is fast and burr free.

    Aging gas lines in America

Ian, you need to check your history books. "Great" Britain absolutely did not make America. We defeated you twice (revolution, 1812) and saved your delicate little hiney twice (WW I, WW II) . This nation became a major world power after you no longer were, and after you went home tail 'twixt...

Thin stream of water from bathroom faucet

I wouldn't got to the trouble and expense to replace the faucet yet. Remove the aerator and supply lines, open both hot and cold sides then shoot compressed air into the spout using short, tiny bursts.w/ a short tube and lungpower. It may be that bits of rust or corrosion lodged in the faucet...

Thin stream of water from bathroom faucet

Are both hot AND cold doing this? If a bibb washer fomt the shutoff has degraded, peices of it may be stuck in the faucet body. I once found this in a showerhead, from a shutoff in the basement.

Can antique (1940s) sink faucets be fixed??

I have had good success with rubber hose that fits tightly-so it bulges when tightened. If you are lucky enough to have a local small hardware store you can probably buy it by the foot. You'd probably find the wall brackets there, too. I tell my clients up front if I need to make a part, that I...

Can antique (1940s) sink faucets be fixed??

Those older items are often classics in their own right and can be rebuilt. To me, and this is just me, they're just as reminiscent of an era as classic cars or architectural design elements. I realize that's not why you purchased it. I've had decent success making the seals, and with fortifying...

New 10" deep sink - now waste drain too high! options?

This very thing happened to my inlaws. The sink and countertop installers (from a big box store)put in a trap with a flexible accordion outlet. With the new deeper sinks it was 2" too high and the end outlet pipe and disposer had water in them all the time. I took pix w/ my phone and raised Holy...

    Help...Rusted fitting won't come off...Do I need a plumber?

Plumbers grease may help...I use neverseize when replacing valve seats, but if you use the braided stainless steel hoses, you probably don't need anything. Just don't use the "floodsafe" ones-they fail at an alarming rate.

Need new fixture for small front mounting sink

What we have at the store is a Kohler shelfback completely rebuilt and tested.Seems identical to yours but with lever handles. Lemme know. Or you may be able to cut off the handles, and then rebuild the stems and install new handles. If a handle puller won't work, you'll do all but the rebuild...

Need new fixture for small front mounting sink

Buy a handle puller. It's a LOT cheaper than a faucet, and your chrome still looks good. You can rebuild that baby for another hundred years. To me, "very old school" would be the beautiful integral spout sinks from the teens and twenties. I have refubished several of these by making my own...

Closet bend 14 ft. from main stack!

OK so 6 ft max from flange to vent. Thanks. Is there no limit to the horizontal run of the drain itself? This one IS sloped at 1/4" per foot. Must it vent directly to the outside or can it loop into the main stack as a revent? Regardless, it's gonna be a real ball cutting into that 4" ci in the...

How do I unthread pipe from a fitting?

Gary's right-wd40 is no good as a penetrating oil. PB Blaster is very good, and kroil is even better. Heat the fitting as Terry said, and as it expands it tends to break up the rust. Cool it off some so the oil won't cook, and oil it up. Go to lunch. Oil it again. Call your girl and flirt, but...

Closet bend 14 ft. from main stack!

I have a client remodeling a 2nd floor 1/2 bath. The toilet is an unbelievable 14 feet from the main stack w/ a 60 deg. bend. (In 4" cast iron of course) The truly joyous part is that 12 ft. of it is in unfinished attic crawlspace. What's the UPC say about THIS humdinger? Thanks for any help.

    Water heater TPR valve issue

the pumper trucks will pull a huge volume reducing the pressure in the main, Several years ago we had a huge multi-alarm fire at the local country club. The pumpers pulled so much water that homes nearby not only had no water, they got a sucking noise through their open taps. I just checked...

Looking for tips on using a powered drain snake.

hj is right, as usual. I rented one for my house, and it was like wrestling a steel python. Twice it partialy wrapped around my wrist, and that momentum is NOT easy to stop. CPVC tastes yucky

Thanks Gary and dcellite. I was leaning towards psychological because this hasn't happened before.Same brand pipe, cement, primer I've always used. Only thing different was the length of time before lines could be flushed out-and the client is different, too.
