: By the gurgling sound it makes when the water goes down the sink drain. Also, by looking on the roof and attic and not seeing any vent holes popping through.

I would not assume that there was no venting (is this a double negative? ;-). A partially clogged drain will cause the problems that you are describing. Kitchen vents can combined with other vents and not be readily discernable.
If there actually are no vents, this needs to be rectified prior to closing any deal. You may be able to run them on the outside of the building and then box them in. You may be able to make a horizontal run through the cabinets to a closet or pantry. I would not recommend an auto vent.
