The guy at home depot probably has years of experience in the plumbing field with the home depot apprenticeship plumbing sales program, then the journeyman plumbing sales, and now a master plumbing salesman. After all, how could he lead you wrong.
I wouldn't worry about what the manufacturer has in their instructions, after all, who really reads them....
Use a flex stainless steel connector not over 6 feet long. Make sure the big platic tag on it has either the AGA or CGA certification. No tag or label but is just cheaper than the good stuff, do not buy it. You need to have a supply line that is certified.
