Caulking drywall around shower stall.

I have installed a new fiberglass shower stall. I ran the greenboard over the flange at the top, but I am now ready to finish and have a couple of questions. 1. Is it customary, prefered, or required to paint the drywall first? 2. Should I cut the drywall back to make space for the caulking, and if so, how far. My guesses are yes, paint first then caulk, and allow maybe 1/4" under the drywall for the caulking, but I am at a point that I can go any direction that is best.
