Can a scratched porcelain sink be polished again?

We have a sink that we absolutely cannot get out without breaking the tile (which are unobtainable by now). Unfortunately someone had that sink resurfacd with some fancy paint. That paint was failing. I stripped some and they must have sanded the sink before. I don't know how thick the glazing is or was. Is it possible to polish and buff such a severely scratched sink? What paste could I use? Regards, Joerg.
