Check around the house for alternative resource before buying piano wire.
In my neck of the woods, boonies = fishing spot nearby. Check the fishing gear for light weight fish leaders or leader wire. braided super stings like Berkley "fireline" / spiderwire / Stren "superbraid" are high strength small diameter fishing strings that will probly work to cut through the caulk/putty. The string will probly break several times but with time and patience i think it will cut through. I use plane nylon string/twine to cut off pvc pipe stubs in tight locations all the time, it might even fit under the sink rim and cut through the caulk.
best of luck...
