My first thought was to give you a smart a** reply, but I'll rephrase it. If you gob sealant on the fitting and repaired the ceiling, would you feel confident in putting a valuable antique below? Neither would I. True, it might hold forever, but then again, it might not. You called it right when you said you did a "temporary" patch, now fix it right. Take the drain fitting and trap off, clean things up, and put in new fittings. You'll slep better if you put Grandma's China cabinet under it.
