I think it is folly to not get at least 2 (and 3 is better) estimates on a job that is over a couple thousand, unless you have a long standing working relationship with this person. I even encourage people that I am bidding for to get other estimates. I don't want anyone to think I am ripping them off.
As hj mentioned, it is tough to bid remotely.
