What material is the pipe made of? You have a "handyman" installation and should install a flange. It may be that he "screwed up" the installation and installing a flange would have been extra work, in which case you now have the task of doing that extra work.
: I am in the middle of replacing a toilet and pulled the old toilet up only to find that there is no floor flange. The instructions and pieces that came with my new toilet are to be used with a floor flange. Is it necessary to use a floor flange. The bathroom has tile floors and the old toilet was attached to the floor with 2 screws that are about 4" long that are screwed directly into holes drilled in the tile.
