In response to Re: lead pipe???
: I am redoing my entire first floor bathroom. It is now down to the studs. There is a bathroom above me w/ galvanized piping for the shower drain, and sink drain. The toilet drain is cast iron going straight down the wall but before it goes straight down there is a small pipe that is lead that runs from the toilet above horizontal maybe a foot or so long, then connects to the cast iron that runs straight down to the basement.Being this is all exposed should I change these pipes, especially the lead pipe?? I mean it is not leaking but how long has lead been known to hold up??
: The house was built in the early fifties adn it is definitely original.

: yuor help is greatly appreciated,

Depending on the physical condition of the piping and how much you want to spend on this project will determine if the pipes should be replaced now.
Although, if it were my house and the wall and ceiling is opened already, common sense would dictate to replace the 50 year old pipes.
Good Luck. e-plumber
