Thanks, I'll try to be even gentler next time.
As to resizing it, I checked the fit of the unmolested end of the piece that I cut off, and it's just as loose as the piece I'm going to be sweating. This thing is just made to fit loose, I guess. The radiator doesn't seem to be of the highest quality, but with only one plumbing supplier in town who carries the darn things, I don't have much choice. One of my plumber friends was complaining about the fragility of these radiators a few months ago: now I know what he meant.
