Porcelain Escutcheons in Shower

I have a question regarding porcelain escutcheons on older bathtub faucet sets. I recently had to remove the escutcheons to access the valve gaskets, and I was wondering if it is necessary to seal around the escutcheons after replacing them to prevent water from leaking behind them and into the wall (they seat pretty close to the tile but there is a slight gap and they spin freely). When I removed the escutcheons, I noticed that they had been packed with what appeared to be plumbers putty, but I don't know if this was to seal them to the tile or just someone being paranoid about water leaking behind them. What is normal practice in this situation?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike
