Great advice from everyone on this one...and all this should definitely not be ignored.
From what you described the $4000 bid sounds pretty reasonable...at least for my area of the country, Cincinnati. Be sure to get at least three bids for the job, but dont think that the cheapest would be the best one to go with. Often times the old adage, "you get what you pay for" is a fact and not just a possibility. Be sure whomever you award the job to is licensed, bonded and insured. Ask to see their credentials. Any quality plumbing contractor will be more than happy to provide you with these documents.
