: We had one when we moved in in 1989 but since then changed our dishwashers at least twice. We do not think our state (Washington) requires us to have one and would like to replace it (it's ugly) with a soap dispenser. Do we absolutely need to have it? And if we do, is above the sink the only place for it? I live in Idaho and we are not required to have an airgap here. The dishwasher hose is looped as high as possible under the cabinet and secured. And then run to the disposer. There are some places that airgaps are required and some plumbers that feel real strongly that they should be used. I have never, however, seen a problem when the dishwasher drain hose is looped high up under the counter.
