hot cold mixing valve malfunction, tub

I living in a 50's home and the hot needs to be on 90% and the cold on 2% to get a fair handle on the water temp. My wife likes the water hotter and just a fraction of a turn creates scalding water. That is bad enough. Now we are due our first child in a few months and bad enough will be too serious! Do I need to adjust the valve? Replace it? Do H/C mixers come as part of a total faucet exchange package? I don't want my family burned because of an erratic valve. Any suggestions? No " why don't you move " answers please.
