: Should a food disposal be connected to a copper drain pipe? I will be using plastic to run from the unit to the wall where the copper pipe starts. A relative says that it causes the copper to deteriorate causing the pipe to leak in the wall. Is this true? Reply:
If the plumbing is installed correctly and the disposer is used properly, the copper drain piping will be fine.
Some local codes here still require only copper or cast iron drain piping for residential plumbing installations.
