Rust is a large issue on the west coast! the majority of the gas companies are now using Galvanized pipe for all their installations. I used to use black pipe, and paint it, but it would only last for about a year (maybe less) and start to rust severely, not just surface rust, but large flakes would come off. we now use galvanized pipe for our installations. of course there is always gas-tite. gotta love that stuff! : In many areas it is, as codes are being updated. It is a hold over from the early 1900's when the gas contained different chemicals which effected the pipes. You will find gas companies in large cities now mixing galvinized and black pipe in their installations. : : Why is galvinized pipe not used for Gas lines ?
