Can snake damage drain pipes?

Hi, I had a plumber come in clean my shower drain about a month ago. After he used two kinds of snakes and ran his snake for about 2 hr or so, he still failed to clear my shower drain, and his snake ( a bigger one) were all tangled in the process. I ended up have to let him go, and called another plumber who cleared the drain in less than 5 minutes. Now a month later, my shower started to leak. I saw a water stain on the ceiling. ( it's 2nd floor shower). My question is could that incompetent plumber damaged my drain pipe joints while running his snake for a long period of time? What is the best way to find the water leak in this case? Thanks a lot. -Judy
