It depends on the type of fire - I currently have the same problem. You will need to get it removed if you want to install a "living flame" recessed gas fire - the only other otion would be to buy a wall hung one (usually very ugly) or go electric (somehow not the same).
A local builder will remove the boiler for you and you will need a corgi installer to install the actual fire.
