Most of the time the odor is caused by the diposer unit. Fill the sink half way with warm water, mix in some baking soda, let it drain and run the disposer at the same time, throw a tray of ice cubes in there and grind them up after that.
To freshen it up once in a while, grind up some orange or lemon peels...always use only cold water.
