According to this document on the EPA site: http://www.epa.gov/ORD/NRMRL/Pubs/625R00008/fs3.pdf The wastewater from a (properly-recharging) softener should be the calcium and magnesium that were removed from the water, which can be good for plants. The treated water in your house has the sodium/potassium in it that was bumped out by the captured magnesium/calcium.
