: : : How do I remove the old drain in the bath tub to rplace it with a new one. I can't get the old push and turn drain system out to put the new one in.

: : The old tub waste may need to be cut out for removal, occaisionally you will be able to unscrew the strainer from the shoe, there is a tool for this which rarely works.
: : The old strainer is sliced, then removed.
: : Use caution while cutting not to damage the bathtub.

: Hi. I'm just starting to tackle the same problem. The stopper system is completely non-functional at the moment (as well as badly discolored) and I just want to replace it with a standard overflow cover plate and use a plug in the drain.

: The diagram you posted looks exactly like the drain arrangement in my bathtub - except of course that I can't see the part behind the tub. I don't want to have to re-tile the wall to get in behind the tub.

: Am I right in interpreting your answer to mean that I should cut off the arm of the drain lever behind the plate? Where will that mechanism go once it's cut?

: And will I be able to get the old drain out?

Reply:
To replace the complete tub waste (overflow) you will need access to the rear of the tub or the bottom.
If you are replacing only the trim that you can see from inside the tub, you can remove the trim and replace it. The body of the tub waste will remain intact and attached to the tub and drain piping.
Good Luck. *westchester plumber*
