Clang, Clang goes the bathtub, Ding Ding goes the hot water heater

Two issues -- when I turn on the water to the master bath tub -- after it hasn't been run in a while -- a big CLANG, as if pipe/pipes are suddenly jolted. Also -- For about five minutes after shower, hot water heater makes a "ticking" or "dinging" sound. What could be the causes, and what might be done? Many thanks.
