: : I travel frequently and have been turning off my water when I leave. However, when I return home and turn the water back on and then turn on a faucet in the house, I get very loud banging - I guess from air in the pipes. I'm afraid I'll damage the pipes. Should I not turn the water off when I go away for a while? Is this loud banging normal? It goes away after I open all the faucets.
: : thank you very much LINDA;The loud banging is not normal, but its a good idea to turn water off when leaving for a few days. We do the same here. You don't say whether your on a city or a country system (well and press. tank) Also do you have a water softener? Post the additional info and we'll try and advise what is causing the noise... Hube

thanks...Hube...
I'm in the city. and I do have a water softener that is attached to the main water inlet. I think the "banging" is more like a loud explosion of air. I try to turn on the water lever slowly, but still sometimes get the banging. thanks so much!!
