It is normal, but it is caused by "nodules" on the inside of the center flue. Water gets into them, is turned to steam by the hot flue gases, and then "pop" when they burst out into the water and condense with a mini explosion.

: We started hearing a loud popcorn noise from the hot water heater after hot water was used. The company I have a service contract with states this is normal - cold water hitting bottom and heating up. Is this true? We have not heard it before in the 6 years we have lived here. Please help.
