: My surround leaves about 2 feet between surround and ceiling which I will fill with greenboard and then paint. I installed a shower two years ago with the same setup in a bathroom with no exhaust fan and I have had no problems. This is the simplest and cheapest way although you could install cement board and tile up to ceiling also. I think you would need to install greenboard or something to the studs and under the cement board but I may be wrong there. Some surrounds are designed to go all the way to ceiling so it depends on what you buy and how you want to finish it off.
