: Our pipes hum and vibrate - sometimes very loudly - when no water is running. When I turn on a faucet it stops and then starts again when I turn it off. What is this all about???

The noise is likely coming from a toilet tank. If the rubber drain flap in the bottom of the tank leaks slightly, the float control valve (especially cheap ones) will call for a slow, continuous water flow setting up a resonance in the valve. This can be very loud at times, especially when line pressure increases (e.g. well pump kicks in) and will disappear when line pressure drops (a faucet is turned on). Replace the toilet tank components with good quality parts!
