I had the same problem. We live in a bit of a hollow and downdrafts seem to be a fact of life. Smoke from the woodstove just hangs low on certain days and the odor from the septic was getting bad more frequently. I pumped the tank, added 2 feet, then 4 feet to the vent stack- all to no avail. Then I installed this pvc carbon filter on top of the vent stack and the unpleasant odor is gone. There several out there but I used a unit made by Orenco systems.
