I can't see how a gas heater could be damaged by the loss of cold water (or water pressure), UNLESS the tank drained or siphoned empty while the pipe was broken. If the heater should come on while empty, it might burn up something before the thermostat gets hot enough and shuts it down. This would especially be true if it was an electric heater - the heating elements will toast if "dry fired".
