I do not know what the term "connected directly" means, but if the drain is connected to the trap riser properly, which means it is just hanging into the pipe, the trap will not lose its water. The solution to your problem is to make sure the drain is connected properly.
: I have a Maytag washer that is connected directly to my laundry room drain above the trap. When the washer is run, 40% of the time the washer will clear all water from the trap and therefore the room stinks after 1/2 hour or so. What do you think I can do to help assure that some water stays in the trap to block the sewage gas.
